Building Our Mother Church Together
The journey towards realising our common vision for building a new Cathedral as a spiritual home for generations to come has been a long one. With significant work already undertaken, the task of raising the funds necessary to build a worthy house of worship – one appropriate for our time and place – is at hand.
A little more than half of the $80 million needed to build our Cathedral precinct will come from insurance proceeds and the sale of land no longer needed to carry out the Diocese’s mission. Those funds provide the foundation for building the Cathedral, Adoration chapel and a community space at Barbadoes St, but they are not enough to complete the vision.
Last year, Bishop Michael and his collaborators started the work of building a community of people who were committed to pursuing that vision. The fundraising target was $35 million.
Many people have already made financial gifts to our missionary project; many more have started making regular contributions that will last for the next five years. That generosity has meant we can take this journey to the next stage.
As we begin our public campaign, we still need to raise $16 million to reach our $80 million project cost. A further $8 million of pledges more will take us to our next milestone target to reach 90% of the project’s costs. It will be at that point that we are ready to proceed with the final preparations before construction begins. Proceeding in this way ensures financial integrity, protects the Diocese and demonstrates unified commitment to build the second Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
We are not simply fundraising for a building. We are building the Mother Church for our Diocese: A place of welcome; A house of worship; A sign of witness.
